Titolo: GSAF - Grid Storage Access Framework
Autori : S. Scifo, G.Foti, F.Portuese, S.Parisi, R.Barbera
Abstract : GSAF (Grid Storage Access Framework) covers some aspects of the Data Access Management area, looking at the integration and development of data oriented applications interfaced with the EGEE gLite grid Middleware. It is an Object Oriented Framework (based on the black box model) developed to create Data Grid Application such us digital archives. It allows developers to extend applications with middleware data management functionalities. Moreover, GSAF introduces the Transaction Layer capability at client side permitting operation sequence in atomic mode on the same dataset There are already several use cases that adopt GSAF: DM Web Manager, BM Portal, GRIDICOM and ADAT are some of them and they are treated in the present work. GSAF project is carried out by a cooperation between the Cometa Consortium and the IR&T engineering s.r.l. (SME located in Catania, Italy) in the context of the PI2S2 Project and the ADAT Project (“Archivi Digitali Antico Testo”), which aim at the implementation of a Digital Archive for Cultural Heritage Data (antique manuscripts) with the Digital Repository based on EGEE grid services.

Titolo: Grid Archiving for Ancient Texts
Autori : S. Scifo, G.Foti, F.Portuese, S.Parisi
Abstract : The preservation of cultural heritages is becoming more and more important nowadays. Unfortunately, several patrimonies has been destroyed due to atmospherical agents, natural disaster and/or human faults. Digitalization is a convenient way to preserve these heritages from every kind of alteration including that one derived from physical restoration. The fast growing of digital data for ancient texts, stresses the storage system in order to handling such large amount of information. The Grid seems the optimum solution for several reasons: Storage scalability, Security, High Availability, Accessibility. This work regards the implementation of a full qualified process based on the digitalization of several terabytes of ancient texts from the Biblioteca Agatina of Catania (Italy); their cataloguing, their storing and their fruition through an innovative Grid Web interface.

Titolo: AMGA WI - A Web Interface to manage Grid Metatada Remotely
Autori : S. Scifo - V. Milazzo
Abstract : AMGA Web Interface is the implementation of the metadata interface designed by the ARDA team and it is the official metadata service of the EGEE gLite middleware. It provides many interesting features: metadata organization in a hierarchical structures, users, groups and ACLs management, powerful SQL-like query language, replications. According to the GSI infrastructure of the gLite Middlerware, this services is accessible through X509 certificates/proxies support. However, interacting with the AMGA services is not always user friendly especially for the non-expert users because the provided clients are only Unix Command Line tools or APIs. So the need for a simple end user friendly interface to manage metadata with AMGA arises. We thought to a web interface to achieve access from any platform: the user just needs a web browser and a VOMS proxy to be authenticated to the AMGA server. After a successful login, he will be able to browse the hierarchy of AMGA collections, to inspect their schema and permissions, and to list their entries. He also has the ability to create a new collection, to define a metadata schema for it, add/edit/delete its entries, and finally to perform queries against its attribute. Regarding all the previous operations, the respect of the collection and entries permissions will be guaranteed allowing users to access information for which he/she is actually authorized. Finally, AMGA Web interface offers administrative modules to manage groups and users and define relationship among them. In future versions, will be added a special module to allow user to build its own VOMS proxy, avoiding to upload it using a web form.

Titolo: The GRID paradigm for network fruition of cultural heritages
Autori : S. Scifo - F. Portuese
We address the topic of the digital archiving of antique books treating the most frequent damages that affect this kind of heritage. We show the results obtained from our research on GRID Storage used as a Content Management System with a brief description of the architecture and technologies involved.

Titolo: Low cost digital reconstruction procedure of 3D objects
Autori : G. Arcidiacono - F. Portuese
Abstract : Computer graphics has made a fast progress in visualizing 3D objects, because the increasing in the storage and computational power of today computer. The range of applications of the 3D digital visualization spans from architecture and heritage conservation to any virtual environment. For cultural heritage, one useful application is the visualization of artistic objects through digital virtual museums, that give the ability to anybody to look monuments and other artistic assets, without necessarily go to the place in which they lie. All these digital products cause important demand for more complex and realistic models; however, a limitation to the widespread use of these techniques is the high costs of proposed standard solutions, which include currently the use of expansive devices as stereo rigs or laser scanners. Thanks to the growing computational power of modern computer, it's possible to reduce the hardware complexity of those systems, moving some important stages from hardware to software implementation, with a significant simplification of the 3D reconstruction procedure.
